Mentoring Guidelines
Interns and Mentors will engage in conversations to share information and to build a collaborative working relationship. Interns will discuss with their mentors what arts experience they have and what they would like to accomplish through this mentoring. Mentors will share their teaching expertise and their art form expertise by providing information and resource ideas and by modeling quality instruction. Conferencing before and after teaching opportunities is recommended when possible.
It is suggested that the collaboration include information to help the intern:
- Use the core curriculum in their chosen art form.
- Use the USOE guidebook, instructional charts and other USOE materials to identify curriculum for their classroom.
- Find resources to support quality arts instruction in their art form.
- Observe their mentor teaching the selected art form to their students.
- Identify their own skill set and ask their mentor to help them use their own arts skills in their classroom.
- Identify and implement quality teaching in the art form and in integrating the art form with other curricular areas.
- Teach side by side with their mentor or have their mentor observe and coach their teaching as per their skill and comfort level.
