The Special Education Program increased my desire to work with individuals with disabilities. I was taught the latest, research-based methods of teaching, and had several opportunities to practice in real situations to apply what I learned. During my first year of teaching, I felt confident and prepared to manage my own classroom. I feel very blessed to have been taught by experts in the field who have a passion for teaching. |

The Special Education program at BYU was excellent preparation for my first year of teaching at Mapleton. I felt confident going into the school year, knowing that I could write Individual Education Plans, plan appropriate curriculum and implement effective lessons. Each semester, we had a course of Behavior Management. Through these two classes, I gained essential skills for having a positive classroom, where every student can feel successful. These courses prepared me for even the most challenging behaviors that I have faced in my first year. Although I am learning more than I could ever have imagined, I know that the program at BYU has given me a strong background. Not only was I given an enormous number of tools during the program, but I was also taught how to problem solve, and where to look for good resources. Completing the ESL endorsement along with the Special Education program was a lot of work, but it also prepared and provided me with many great teaching tools. Although I am not currently working with many ESL students, the material for these courses present good teaching practices that can be generalized and are effective for working with any student. The courses for working with families and the community are especially valuable, as collaborating with the families of my students is an essential component of teaching students with disabilities. |

The BYU special education program helped me accomplish my goal of graduating with a Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University. It also helped me prepare for my career as a special educator by teaching effective teaching methods, curriculum and how to assess my students. It also gave me a foundation of correct principles of teaching and how I can implement them in my own classroom. |

The BYU special education program helped me accomplish my goal. My post- bac studies from Brigham Young University helped me prepare for my career as a special educator by teaching effective teaching methods, curriculum and how to assess my students. Learning to have high expectations for my students also gave me a foundation of correct principles of teaching and how I can implement them in my own classroom. |

The BYU CPSE program was very beneficial in many ways. It helped me have high expectations for these children. It taught me to view individuals with disabilities in a more positive light. In particular it helped me view those with behavior problems as precious individuals with learning needs so I can react to negative behaviors more appropriately. It prepared me to teach different subjects in a way that the students could understand. The program helped me to believe in these individuals. They are capable of much. |

The Special Education program helped me grow in many ways to be able to work with my students currently in a clinical setting. Many of the behavior strategies and techniques I learned are things I am using on a daily basis. Because of this I feel I am able to assist other therapists around me as well as parents on how to deal with problem behaviors. The program also taught me many teaching strategies and I learned it which order to teach certain skills. This has helped me when selecting programs for my students, I know what skills they need to master before moving on to something new. Overall, I loved being part of this Special Education Program at BYU and learning from my professors and peers in my cohort.

The special education program at BYU opened up many doors for me. It gave me wonderful hands on experience with everything from preparing lesson plans to standardized testing to writing individualized education plans. I feel that the courses I participated in and completed prepared me to enter into an educational setting, I was ready to collaborate with others, and enjoy every second of working with students. It also gave me a wonderful chance to interact with other special educators and the professors at BYU in an uplifting environment. |

The special education liscensure program at BYU prepared me to teach a variety of students. I received a job right after graduating to teach an elementary medically fragile class where I used what I had learned about augmentative and assistive communication devices and adapting curriculum. I was able to teach a class of high school students who have autism for the three months prior to having a baby and it was a great experience. This was a lot different of a class but I was able to pull from my experiences in student teaching and all I had learned in the program to meet their needs. I relied on what I'd been taught about behavior management and behavior analysis every day. The special education program was an excellent program and I felt prepared to handle the many trials and challenges you face in the classroom. I am not teaching currently but I am still using what I learned with my own daughter and will continue to use my education to teach my children until I go back to teaching students again. |

I feel the program prepared me very well for my teaching. Although I have learned much from experience I have had in the 3 years I have been teaching in the public education system, the skills and knowledge of direct instruction that was taught in the program have given me a strong foundation on how best to teach kids who have learning disabilities. The program also trained me well on how to write good goals for IEPs, how to task analyze content, the importance of keeping data, behavior management skills, BIPs. |

The Special Education program at Brigham Young University prepared me to work with individuals with severe to profound disabilities, by providing me with countless opportunities to use and implement the best practices learned and apply them in a practical manner. Each course throughout the program provided me with valuable tools that have helped me succeed and recognize the unique opportunity and privilege I have to walk on sacred ground each day I enter my classroom! |
