Post-baccalaureate Program Requirements
The BYU Special Education Licensure Program is designed to lead to appropriate teaching licensure for individuals interested in teaching students with disabilities. The program has two tracks:
Students Who Have Degrees in Education
The following schedule is for currently certified teachers who want to earn a license in the area of special education.
Credit Hours: 48 semester hours
Prerequisites: As a certified teachers, you should have already completed the following courses or their equivalents:
- CPSE 400: Exceptional Students
- CPSE 480: Multicultural Issues
- IP&T 287: Instructional Technology in Teaching.
The skills taught in these course are essential for your success in the post-baccalaureate program. If you are not demonstrating these skills throughout the program, you may need to complete these courses before you are recommended for licensure.
Schedule: The following tables display the sequnce in which classes will be taken once you have been admitted to the licensure program. Note that spring and summer terms are to be used for special education coursework. Your final semester will consist of student teaching OR an internship (which continues through winter semester).

Students Who Have Degrees in Fields Other Than Education
The following schedule is for individuals holding current bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees who do not have a certificate or license in education.
Credit Hours: 55 semester hours
Prerequisite: CPSE 400 (2 hrs) should have been taken prior to beginning the program.
Schedule: The following tables display the sequence in which classes will be taken once you have been admitted to the licensure program. Note that spring and summer terms are to be used for special education coursework. Your final semester will consist of student teaching OR an internship (which continues through winter semester).

Students Who Have Degrees in Fields Other Than Education
The following schedule is for individuals holding current bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees who do not have a certificate or license in education.
Credit Hours: 50 semester hours
Prerequisite: CPSE 403 (3 hrs) should have been taken prior to beginning the program.
Other requirements: IP&T 287 (2) is required to be taken during the program. This course is offered only fall or winter semesters and all CPSE, ElEd, and ECE sections satisfy this requirement for post-bacc students.

Fieldwork and Practica for the BYU Special Education Programs
Practical field experiences are an essential component of our SPED programs. For more detailed information on Special Education 's practica go to "Description of Fieldwork and Practica".
