Brief Biography

I have spent many years as an educator, first as an elementary classroom teacher for 20 years and since that time as a teacher educator. I earned my BS, MA, and Rank 1 from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, and my doctorate from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, where I studied both literacy and mathematics education. I am especially interested in language-mathematics relationships and enjoy helping teachers and their students understand and use the language of mathematics. I have conducted research and written articles on various aspects of mathematics language development, the use of children’s literature in mathematics, problem solving, vocabulary development in mathematics, and professional development in mathemaics  education of preservice and inservice teachers. I also have several related projects in progress. Although not research in the strict sense of the word, one of my all-time favorite projects has been developing a mathematics dictionary for children, entitled Math Dictionary: The Easy, Simple, Fun Guide to Help Math Phobics Become Math Lovers (2006).

I also spend time working with classroom teachers and other teacher educators. Currently I am working with teachers in the Utah Elementary Mathematics Endorsement, and a colleague and I consult intermittently with the Faculty of Education at the National University of Samoa in Apia. I also support faculty of the School of Education at Brigham Young University Hawaii in their writing efforts. Whatever I do or wherever I work, I typically collect data—so there are lots of possibilities for research in what I’m doing. Usually in my professional development work, my research focuses on student mathematical thinking, since that is what I consider the “heart” of instruction, curriculum, and assessment.

My professional interest in speaking, consulting, and writing in mathematics education also is congruent with my personal interest in  â€œseeing the world” (or at least as much of it as I can). But I am always eager to return home to the people and relationships that anchor my life—my family, my friends, and my church.

Brief Biography

Katie Edna Steed is an Associate Clinical Professor at Brigham Young University in the department of Counseling Psychology and Special Education. Her area of expertise is in children with severe disabilities, including mental retardation, traumatic brain injury and Autism. She teaches the methods and practicum courses at BYU for students who would like to become licensed Special Educators with a Severe Endorsement.

Prior to coming to BYU as a professor, Katie taught in the public schools both as a general educator for one year and as a special educator for three. During this time she completed her Masters of Science in Special Education. Her thesis is entitled: Instructing teachers of children with disabilities within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She is passionate about this topic and has presented at several churches over the past 10 years on how to best instruct their primary age children with special needs. Her crowning moment with this work was when she was invited to present her findings to The Primary General Board and Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 2007, Katie and her husband, Marc Steed, travelled as Church Humanitarian Missionaries to Albania where they conducted a week-long training for professionals in the fields of medicine and education on how to work with children with special needs.

Four months after Katie and her husband returned from Albania they welcomed a beautiful baby girl. Lucy is now 6 years-old and two more children have joined the family: David age 4 and Vivian age 2.

Katie and her family love to play outside whenever they can. Whether it is at the neighborhood park, climbing a mountain, or just sitting on a blanket in their own backyard, this is where they find great joy.

Geo-JaJa is Professor of Economics and Education at Brigham Young University, where he directs the Research Program in Rights in Education, Capabilities Deprivation, and Right to Development. He is currently a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellow and a Visiting Research Professor at Zhejiang Normal University, china. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Nigerian Think Tank and on numerous journal editorial boards, including the editorial consulting board of International Review of Education a UNESCO journal.
I am a co-author with Majhanovich, Suzanne, of Economics, Aid, and Education; Implication for Development for Development; co-editor with Shizhou Lou; and Yong Y.; of Education, Poverty, and Development in sub-Saharan Africa; co-editor with Majhanovich, Suzanne, of Education, Language and Economics: Growing National and Global Dilemmas; and the Politics of Education Reforms: Globalization, Comparative Education and Policy Research. Professor Geo-JaJa is author or co-author of many tier one journal articles, and numerous book chapters and other. of education in Africa.

Teaching Interests

I teach economics of education, Capabilities Deprivation, and education in development with a focus on rights in education in foreign aid. For the past eight years I have been teaching human rights education and comparative international education, as well as internationalization of education in Africa in China.

Research Interests

I have done on-site research and program work in many countries including, China, Norway, Sweden, Vietnam, Zanzibar, in right to education as an agent of inclusive development, unlike the twinning of rights in education and right to development which are critically intertwined. Also of interest is the role of rights-capability approach in development aid; the economics of human rights, decentralization and capacity-building, and the internationalization of education. I have also contributed to sharing knowledge on the need to make space for concerns of rights in education (epistemic relativism) over right to education (universalism) in development. This new niche of research has been a contribution as a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellow to universities and research institutions worldwide.

Brief Biography

Dr. Larsen received his undergraduate and masters degree in statistics at BYU. He furthered his education by studying Educational Psychology with an emphasis on Research and Measurement at Texas A & M where he got his PhD. He has worked as a post-doctoral researcher and researcher scientist at the University of Virginia and as an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He, his wife, and his four children are delighted to be back in Provo working for BYU.

Teaching Interests

One of my primary strengths is enthusiasm in the teaching of statistics. It is truly exciting to share my knowledge with others so they, too, can analyze data and make decisions based on data. Statistics can be fun when taught well, and this can relieve the anxiety that many students enter the class with.

Research Interests

My research encompasses much of what confronts a social scientist when they are analyzing data and validating theory.    Two defining themes that motivate my research are: (a) common methodological social science issues and (b) comprehensive structural equation modeling.
