Brief Biography

Dr. Larsen received his undergraduate and masters degree in statistics at BYU. He furthered his education by studying Educational Psychology with an emphasis on Research and Measurement at Texas A & M where he got his PhD. He has worked as a post-doctoral researcher and researcher scientist at the University of Virginia and as an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He, his wife, and his four children are delighted to be back in Provo working for BYU.

Teaching Interests

One of my primary strengths is enthusiasm in the teaching of statistics. It is truly exciting to share my knowledge with others so they, too, can analyze data and make decisions based on data. Statistics can be fun when taught well, and this can relieve the anxiety that many students enter the class with.

Research Interests

My research encompasses much of what confronts a social scientist when they are analyzing data and validating theory.    Two defining themes that motivate my research are: (a) common methodological social science issues and (b) comprehensive structural equation modeling.

Brief Biography

I am a former mathematics and science teacher. I currently work to prepare teachers to work with middle school and high school students.

Teaching Interests

I teach courses in multicultural education, content-area literacy, STEM discourses, and research methodology.

Research Interests

I am interested in the texts and literacies used to participate in disciplinary communities (particularly in the various STEM disciplines and the arts). I am also interested in understanding how to prepare teachers to create safe and affirming spaces where all young people can learn, grow, and thrive.

Brief Biography

I am an assistant professor in the Instructional Psychology & Technology department. I graduated with my PhD from the University of Georgia in 2009 and am a member or past member of AECT, AERA, AEA, and SITE.

You can follow me on Twitter @richardewest

Teaching Interests

I teach undergraduate preservice courses in instructional technology, as well as graduate courses in instructional design and technology, creativity and innovation theories, research and academic writing, and program evaluation.

I am also a co-developer of the IPT ED TEC Badges (see iptedtec.org  )

Research Interests

My primary research interests include how to design, evaluate, and support environments for fostering collaborative innovation, and how to effectively design online learning communities. In addition, I have published on issues related to technology integration, evaluation, and preservice training.

Through my research, I have developed:
      - The Communities of Innovation framework for understanding the characteristics of innovative communities of workers or learners.
This framework received the AECT Young Scholar and Outstanding Journal Article Award.
      - A framework (With Peter Rich) for evaluating the quality of academic scholarship based on the principles of Rigor, Impact, and Prestige.
This framework has been explained in articles in Innovative Higher Education and Educational Technology.
      - A validated instrument (with Brad Marianno) for assessing individual levels of dynamic expertise, a key characteristic of members of
      innovative communities.

My articles can be downloaded or viewed at:

I am especially interested in translating basic research in behavioral psychology to inform practice in clinical and school settings. In addition, I am interested in motivation for tasks involving language and literacy in children with disabilities. Finally, I do research on the development and phenomenology of repetitive behaviors and selective mutism in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
