Brief Biography

Dr. Kristine Tanner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University. She holds Adjunct appointments in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Division of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at The University of Utah. She consults at The Voice Disorders Center in Salt Lake City. Dr. Tanner provides care for patients with a variety of voice problems and specializes in care of the professional voice.  She is also a classically trained lyric soprano.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Tanner's teaching interests include voice disorders, speech and voice anatomy and physiology, and swallowing function.

Research Interests

Dr. Tanner's research interests include laryngeal and airway surface tissue hydration, voice disorders epidemiology, and professional voice issues.

18 years of experience designing instructional systems for comercial clients while working for Courseware, Incorporated and WICAT. Transitioned to academics in 1993. Instructional Technology department at Utah State University 1993-2003. Department Chair at Brigham Young University 2003-2014.

Brief Biography

Bryant is interested in improving learning opportunities for Latino children, especially those from Mexican and Central American immigrant families. His work addresses cultural dimensions of social and academic learning, home-school collaborations, professional development, mixed methods, and design-based approaches. Bryant has worked as a school psychologist in urban schools in Arizona, and studied literacy learning in different communities and school types in Mexico. Previously he was a research associate for the National Task Force on Early Education for Hispanics, a Fulbright scholar in Mexico, teacher educator in CA's San Joaquin Valley, and an IES postdoc fellow at the University of Oregon.

Brief Biography

Michael O. Tunnell teaches children's literature at Brigham Young University.  He has published several professional books, including CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, BRIEFLY (with Jim Jacobs) and THE STORY OF OURSELVES:  TEACHING HISTORY THROUGH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE (with Richard Ammon)--as well as a variety of journal articles about children's books and reading.  He also writes for young readers.  Some of his titles include THE CHILDREN OF TOPAZ (Holiday House, 1996), MAILING MAY (Greenwillow, 1997), WISHING MOON (Dutton, 2004), and CANDY BOMBER: THE STORY OF THE BERLIN AIRLIFT'S "CHOCOLATE PILOT" (Charlesbridge, 2010).  He also has served twice on the John Newbery Award committee.

Brief Biography

Ramona Maile Cutri received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and is an assistant professor of multicultural education at Brigham Young University’s Teacher Education Department.  Dr. Cutri’s passion for the areas of multicultural and bilingual education stem from her own experiences as a child of mixed ethnicities who grew up in poverty. Dr. Cutri utilizes methods of narrative research to analyze teacher candidates’ perceptions of their own privilege, the emotional work involved in multicultural teacher education, cross-class identities, and moral and pedagogical issues related to multicultural teacher education.

Brief Biography

Dr. Ryan Kellems is a Assistant Professor in the Counseling Psychology and Special Education department at Brigham Young University.  Prior to coming to BYU Dr. Kellems was a research associate with the National Post-School Outcomes Center at the University of Oregon. His primary research interests are video modeling, transition for students with disabilities, post-school outcomes of students with disabilities, assistive technology, and working with young adults with autism in community-based vocational settings.  One of Dr. Kellems areas of expertise is using the latest technology to assist students with disabilities as they transition to life after school.  
Prior to completing his doctoral degree Dr. Kellems was a high school teacher where he worked in both rural and urban settings as a special education and Social Studies teacher.
Dr. Kellems also conducts professional development across the country related to implementing video modeling in academic and community based settings.

Brief Biography

I was born in Tempe, AZ. yet, grew up in Layton, Utah.  Shortly after graduating from high school, I served a full-time mission to the Philippines Manila Mission (81-83). I am married to the former Torri Bown.  We have two children, Kate (18) and Sam (10).  I have taught at North Dakota State University, Oklahoma State University and now here at Brigham Young University.

Brief Biography

Dr. Davies is originally from Alberta Canada. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Mathematics and a B.Ed. in Secondary Education. He received a Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology and Technology from BYU. Dr. Davies served a mission in Spain Madrid. He taught high school for 10 years and worked for four years overseas at the Dubai Women's College in Dubai, UAE.  Prior to joining BYU he conducted evaluation research at the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University, and taught educational research, assessment & evaluation courses on the Indiana University South Bend campus.

My primary teaching responsibilities include Program Evaluation and Assessment in School

Research Interests

My research expertise is in educational evaluation and assessment.  My primary research agenda includes understanding and improving the teaching and learning process through the use of technology. This involves evaluating technology integration efforts and studying how to better use technology in educational settings.  I am currently working on projects utilizing educational data mining and learning analytics (EDM/LA) techniques to improve instruction in technology enabled learning situations. In addition, I have worked with improving assessment, as its impact on evaluation is so important; I have also published on the topic of teaching evaluation as it relates to my primary teaching responsibilities.

Brief Biography

I received my BS and MS in Family Sciences, followed by a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies. I took this training and applied it as the Director of Children's Programs of an early learning facility managed by Auburn University. Since 2004 I have been at BYU as an Early Childhood Teacher Educator, teaching early childhood education courses that draw on my background, training, and experience.

I am an assistant professor in the Instructional Psychology & Technology department. I graduated with my PhD from the University of Georgia in 2009 and am a member or past member of AECT, AERA, AEA, and SITE.

I teach undergraduate preservice courses in instructional technology, as well as graduate courses in instructional design and technology, creativity and innovation theories, research and academic writing, and program evaluation.

I am also a co-developer of the IPT ED TEC Badges (see iptedtec.org  )

Research Interests

My primary research interests include how to design, evaluate, and support environments for fostering collaborative innovation, and how to effectively design online learning communities. In addition, I have published on issues related to technology integration, evaluation, and preservice training.

Through my research, I have developed:
      - The Communities of Innovation framework for understanding the characteristics of innovative communities of workers or learners.
      This framework received the AECT Young Scholar and Outstanding Journal Article Award.
      - A framework (With Peter Rich) for evaluating the quality of academic scholarship based on the principles of Rigor, Impact, and Prestige.
      This framework has been explained in articles in Innovative Higher Education and Educational Technology.
      - A validated instrument (with Brad Marianno) for assessing individual levels of dynamic expertise, a key characteristic of members of
      innovative communities.

Erin Feinauer Whiting is an Assistant Professor of Multicultural Education at Brigham Young University. Her research work has examined many aspects of community, inequality and culture. Her research focuses on understanding and alleviating social inequality including a focus on school community and organization for the inclusion of all students. She is also engaged in research examining how preservice teacher candidates prepare for teaching through a critical multicultural education that is intended to unpack social privilege and cultural difference. She is beginning work exploring the role of food in schooling and supporting a growing school food movement and community gardens at schools in UT.

Brad Wilcox is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Brigham Young University.  He also enjoys visiting schools across the country as a consultant and visiting author to promote literacy.

Teaching Interests

Brad teaches classes in literacy, specifically teaching reading and writing in both primary and intermediate grades.  He also enjoys teaching children's literature and missionary preparation.  At the graduate level he has taught courses in reading comprehension, literacy foundations, and process writing.

Tina was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, the third of four children of Richard and Charlene Taylor. She served an LDS mission to Bangkok, Thailand, which included welfare and educational service to Southeast Asian refugees.

Dr. Dyches graduated from Brigham Young University with her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, Utah State University with her master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education, and Illinois State University with her doctoral degree in Educational Administration and Foundations and Specialized Educational Development.

My research and teaching interests focus on assessment and intervention for problem behaviors exhibited by children with autism, emotional/behavioral disorders, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. I am especially interested in translating basic research in behavioral psychology to inform practice in clinical and school settings. In addition, I am interested in motivation for tasks involving language and literacy in children with disabilities. Finally, I do research on the development and phenomenology of repetitive behaviors and selective mutism in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Brief Biography

Grew up here in Utah Valley and attended BYU to earn B.S. and M.Ed. degrees.  I am married to Brian Smith and have five children.  I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently serve in primary.  In earlier years I taught students in special education in Jordan and Provo School Districts.  I gained experience in both mild/moderate and severe settings in elementary schools and high school.  Learning and teaching make me happy.  Other hobbies include reading, sports, cooking, animals, traveling, and spending time with my family.

Brief Biography

Dr. Lynnette B. Erickson has been an educator for over thirty years and has served eighteen of those years on the faculty of Brigham Young University in the Department of Teacher Education in Provo, Utah. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Teaching and Learning from Brigham Young University, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Arizona State University. Prior to teaching in higher education she taught third grade in public schools in Payson, Utah and Gilbert, Arizona. Her collegiate teaching includes undergraduate and graduate courses at Arizona State University and Brigham Young University. Dr. Erickson served as associate department chair in Teacher Education for eight years at Brigham Young University where she was involved with several accreditation reviews, national and international student teaching programs, and program improvement.
