Advice for Teachers From BYU's Multicultural Clubs
The Black Student Union
- Don’t assume all students come from the same background, ethnic or economic
- Don’t assume negatives about ethnic students, such as:
- It’s okay to talk about touchy subjects
- The more you make race an issue in your class, the more it becomes an issue
- Watch how other students regard minorities and intervene where proper
- Understand that skin color really doesn’t matter
- Teach lessons from the opposing view from the majority
- Hold students accountable for the things they are supposed to learn
- Don’t lump students with the same skin color together
- Don’t pretend you’re with 'it' when you’re not
- You don’t have to act black to prove you’re not racist
- Students appreciate a teacher who can be his or herself
