Advice for Teachers From BYU's Multicultural Clubs

The Black Student Union

  • Don’t assume all students come from the same background, ethnic or economic
  • Don’t assume negatives about ethnic students, such as:
  • They can’t compete
  • They are sailing freely and without effort on Affirmative Action
  • Money is thrown at them because of their race
  • They need extra special attention
  • It’s okay to talk about touchy subjects
  • The more you make race an issue in your class, the more it becomes an issue
  • Watch how other students regard minorities and intervene where proper
  • Understand that skin color really doesn’t matter
  • Teach lessons from the opposing view from the majority
  • Showing multiple perspectives without making most students upset is a skill worth working towards
  • Hold students accountable for the things they are supposed to learn
  • Don’t lump students with the same skin color together
  • Not all Hispanics are Mexicans!
  • Don’t pretend you’re with 'it' when you’re not
  • You don’t have to act black to prove you’re not racist
  • Students appreciate a teacher who can be his or herself
