I. Entry Term

A. LPP students begin Spring Term.
B. All other students begin Summer Term.

II. Requirements For Degree

A. Credit Hours: Students must complete the credit hour requirements for their chosen emphasis. These emphases require a minimum of 40-48 credit hours to receive the master’s degrees. A minimum of 30 hours must be in the Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations (EDLF). No undergraduate credit, extension or home study courses, or credit earned in EDLF 514R or EDLF 515R may count toward the credit hour requirement. Appropriate credit earned at BYU while the student is in non-degree status (not to exceed a total of 10 semester hours) may be applied toward the master’s degrees upon approval of the master’s program committee.

B. Graduate: Transfer Credit: Appropriate transfer credit from other institutions of higher education (not to exceed a total of 6 semester hours) may be applied toward the master’s degree upon approval of the master’s program committee. However, courses used to obtain a previous degree may not be transferred.

C. Grades: The candidate must achieve at least a 3.0 average in all graduate work. No grade lower than a C- will be counted toward graduation.

D. Registration: Students should register for courses as outlined on their study list. Students must be registered for a minimum of 6.0 credits per academic year to remain in the program.

E. Study List: All students must submit an approved study list by the end of their first semester. The student must take the responsibility to meet with their advisor to create an acceptable study list. The study list must be approved by the Master’s Committee. Any changes must be entered on a Change of Study List form, receive the appropriate signatures, and be on file in the Department.

F. Comprehensive Examination: All candidates for the M.Ed. are required to take a comprehensive examination. The course work and internship experience (if applicable) will be the focus of the questions on the examination. The comprehensive examination is concerned with central topics in the selected area of emphasis. Questions are comprehensive in nature and are designed to measure the breadth and depth of knowledge, as well as ability to focus that knowledge on specific problems. The examination is offered twice yearly, once in winter and once in spring. Students may be passed or failed on the examination. Students who fail the examination are given a second opportunity to retake the examination in the area failed. No third sitting for the examination is permitted. The comprehensive examination is only taken after the course requirements are completed.

G. Masters Demonstration of Knowledge and Competence: Under the School Leadership emphasis, students seeking Licensure are required to do an Internship and Internship Seminar. Students seeking the non-licensure emphasis are required to do a project or thesis. A project may consist of a scholarly paper or monograph that is a result of original investigation that reflects the student’s experience. The Education Policy and Social Foundations (EPSF) emphasis requires a project or thesis. The CIDE emphasis requires a project or thesis. This project requires the application of curriculum and, therefore, should be completed toward the end of the student’s program of study. Research projects entail a written, publishable-quality, APA-formatted manuscript. Internships require a written, reflective portfolio. A thesis requires a written and oral defense.

III. Honor Code and Dress and Grooming Standards

Students who are admitted to Brigham Young University have committed themselves to abide by the standards outlined in the Honor Code and Dress and Grooming Standards. It is expected that each student will follow these standards with integrity.

IV. Continuing Ecclesiastical Endorsement

All continuing students must submit a new continuing ecclesiastical endorsement by the University deadline each year. Non-LDS students may obtain an endorsement through an ecclesiastical officer of their choice or through the Student Life Office.
