Executive School Leadership Program (ExSL)
The BYU Department of Educational Leadership and Foundations (EDLF) offers two administrator preparation programs: the Leadership Preparation Program (LPP) and the Executive School Leadership Program (ExSL).
The ExSL Program is a two-year part-time program, with flexibility to meet individual student timing needs to do the program more quickly or more slowly.
The Executive School Leadership Program (ExSL) is designed to accommodate individuals who are working full-time who wish to complete a Master’s of Education Degree and become eligible for an Utah Administrative License. The ExSL program provides the opportunity and the flexibility for students to be actively involved in the design of their path to school leadership and can be completed under either part- or full-time study. Full-time, non-working students may finish in an intensive 3.5 semesters; part-time students may finish in 7-8 semesters. The ExSL Program begins in summer term (last week of June).
New Program Design
The revised ExSL Program has been and is continously being developed through a strategic analysis which includes multiple sources of feedback including stakeholder need and requirements (BYU, State accreditation and licensure, partner districts, students), research on other regional school leadership preparation programs, and ongoing discussions with and feedback from EDLF faculty, districts, advisory board members and students. Research is still continuing on the current research literature and the current cutting-edge part-time preparation programs. Based on the principle of dynamic stability, this process will be ongoing to facilitate continuous change.
Our strategy of dynamic stability ensures that the ExSL program will be under continuous improvement to improve its quality and responsiveness to stakeholders and to better meet the needs of ExSL students.
The ExSL Host-District Cohort Model is a key component of the revised ExSL Program and builds on the foundation of BYU’s strategic district partnerships. The ExSL Program seeks the involvement of BYU Partnership Districts in negotiating and facilitating a Host District Cohort Model that aligns with their need to develop future leaders that have the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be able and willing to improve student learning.
The ExSL program facilitates the completion of the minimum state-required 450-hour administrative internship, including an elementary, secondary and district experience. Students work with their program chair to design flexible and effective administrative internship experiences and may elect to do additional administrative internship hours to gain additional experience and further improve placement potential. Students will be placed as administrative interns in approved schools with approved mentor principals.
