June 12, 2009 Symposium Overview

The BYU-Public School Partnership, the David O. McKay School of Education, and the College of Humanities are pleased to sponsor the first annual symposium highlighting the capacities and potentials of English language learners and their families. The symposium is designed to dispel myths about these learners and their families and to develop action plans for community engagement. Additionally, sessions will consider attitudes and practices that limit full participation and potential contributions of these learners in our communities, state, and nation.

 Symposium Goals

  • Inspire symposium participants to recognize the capacities and potentials of English language learners and their families
  • Dispel commonly held myths and misconceptions about English language learners and their families
  • Positively influence public policy and education practices that relate to the success and well-being of English language learners and their families
  • Report research conerned with advancing the achievement and development of English language learners—linking research with high quality teaching practices and achievement
  • Embrace actions plans that benefit English language learners within their communities

June 11, 2009 TRESOL – Teachers Renewing ESOL Celebration

The BYU-Public School Partnership and the McKay School of Education are celebrating the work of our ESL teachers in public schools. This celebration will provide opportunities to share new learning:  learning from each other as well as from the experts in our field.

The celebration is to honor all who contribute to the lives and education of students who are learning English as a second language.

June 11, 2009 - Parent Roundtable

This discussion will focus on supporting parents of English language learners as they learn  to navigate U.S. public schools.

 Main Topics

  • Including parents as knowledge holders and support agents
  • Creating culturally safe environments for parents to engage in conversations concerning the ELL student experience
  • Promoting reciprocal learning: educators learning from parents and disseminating information to parents
  • Empowering parents to navigate foreign spaces

Intended Outcomes

  • To increase understanding of perceptions and perspectives of ELL parents
  • To create a list of parents willing to be engaged in future dialogues
  • To request and consider suggestions from parents about issues that need attention regarding their students' needs
  • To establish trust between educators and ELL parents for future collaboration
  • To help parents feel more comfortable on university campuses
