June 12, 2009 Symposium Overview

The BYU-Public School Partnership, the David O. McKay School of Education, and the College of Humanities are pleased to sponsor the first annual symposium highlighting the capacities and potentials of English language learners and their families. The symposium is designed to dispel myths about these learners and their families and to develop action plans for community engagement. Additionally, sessions will consider attitudes and practices that limit full participation and potential contributions of these learners in our communities, state, and nation.
Symposium Goals
- Inspire symposium participants to recognize the capacities and potentials of English language learners and their families
- Dispel commonly held myths and misconceptions about English language learners and their families
- Positively influence public policy and education practices that relate to the success and well-being of English language learners and their families
- Report research conerned with advancing the achievement and development of English language learners—linking research with high quality teaching practices and achievement
- Embrace actions plans that benefit English language learners within their communities
