Ling 472 - Developing Second Language Literacy

esl

This is the fourth of seven courses that lead to an ESL endorsement. In this course, we explore the role of literacy development in content-area learning. Specifically, the course focuses on expanding mainstream teachers' understanding of second language literacy development so they can support second language learners' literacy and content learning. Teachers are presented with a two-part literacy framework. First, building on previous learning, this course extends the second language acquisition concepts of Communication, Pattern, and Variability from oral language development to literacy development. Second, teachers are introduced to five ESL Guidelines for Curriculum Development that support literacy and content learning. This methods course highlights use of effective strategies grounded in sociocultural teaching practices, as represented by the Standards for Effective Pedagogy.

  • Focuses on academic language development and supporting students in developing literacy skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking.
  • Guides teachers to reconsider the sociocultural context of literacy development.
  • Deepens teachers' understanding of the concepts of Communication, Pattern, and Variability in second language learners' development of literacy skills.
  • Presents numerous reading, writing, and vocabulary development strategies.
  • Contrasts students' task in first and second language literacy development.
  • Examines family literacy and what counts as literate practices across cultures.
