TELL 477R - ESL Practicum

This is the seventh course of the Bilingual/ESL endorsement. The credit for this course is attached to each of the six video-anchored courses. When the six video-anchored courses are completed, in-service participants are awarded the four practicum credits. Pre-service participants are awarded these credits at the completion of their student teaching.
Course Description for preservice:
This course will show evidence that students know, understand, and use best practices regarding planning, teaching, and assessing ESL students following the completion of six courses leading to the ESL endorsement or seven courses leading to a TESOL K-12 minor. The focus will be on the practical aspects of integrating language and literacy methodologies through teaching content in the classroom. It is offered as a four-credit course consisting of 50 contact hours plus 10 hours spent in collaborative planning and reflecting.
The course will include observations, using NCATE/TESOL criteria, of other teachers by the candidate and of the candidate; planning, teaching, and assessing lessons that correlate with the core curriculum in content areas, meet TESOL K-12 goals and NCATE standards, and the CREDE Standards for Effective Pedagogy; and completion of a reflective journal of the teaching experience. At least 4 ESL students must be in the classroom and an ESL endorsed teacher available for mentoring. Student Checklist: (2 points each)
- Attend an orientation
- 2 Observations of other teachers resulting in a 1-2 page typewritten Reflection using the criteria below
- 3 Observations of student resulting in a 1-2 page typewritten Reflection using criteria below and based on lessons observed by BYU supervisor, colleague, self
- One unit or five lesson plans typewritten using the Instructional Plan with cognitive, social/affective, linguistic goals and objectives
- Five Samples of assessments to correspond to unit (teacher prepared with student evidence)
- Reflective Log of at least ten entries (typewritten, showing how you attended to each criteria below in your practicum. See sample.)
- Attend an exit interview to present portfolio (title page, observations and reflections, lesson plans, assessments, reflective log
