Licensure
Recommendation
To be recommended for a teaching license you must have an exit interview with your advisor at Education Student Services (120 MCKB) at the time you apply for graduation.
Type of license
The licensure will be a Level 1 license valid for 3 years and renewable only once.
This license will permit you to teach the following Levels:
- Early childhood: K - 3rd
- Elementary: 1st - 6th
- Secondary: 6th – 12th
- Administrative/supervisory: Preschool special
- Special education: Special education classroom
- Communication disorders: Schools, hospitals, private facilities, or clinic
Timing
You will receive your teaching license 12 to 14 weeks after graduation. If it does not arrive after the prescribed time, please contact the State Office of Education:

Certification for those who already have a Bachelor's degree
1. If you have already received a bachelor's degree and you want to return to college to obtain a teaching license, contact Education Student Services (801-422-3426) to explore your options.
2. We recommend that you also contact the State Office of Education (www.schools.utah.gov) to discover alternative routes to licensure.

Certification in an Additional State
To obtain a teaching license in another state when you already have a Utah teaching license
1. You must contact the State Office of Education for the state you wish to teach in to see what their licensure requirements are.
2. Usually you will need to complete an Institutional Verification Form, which you get from the state you wish to teach in.
3. If the state you wish to teach in requires an Institutional Verification Form to be completed, go to our Release of Information page and print the release form. You will need to send this form to Education Student Services along with your Institutional Verification Form. Please be sure to complete the top portion of the Verification Form, which requests your information.
