Students who complete their student teaching in Mexico will be assigned to English-speaking schools in the "Mormon Colonies" located in northern Chihuahua Mexico. Elementary Education students will be placed in one of the two elementary schools, one in Colonia Juarez and the other in Colonia Dublan. Secondary Education students will be placed in the Juarez Stake Academy, a CES school in Colonia Juarez. Student teachers are immersed in unique cultural settings and are exposed to insignts and expertise that can prepare them to work more effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Student teachers will have the opportunitiy to examine cultural and educational differences and similarities between Mexico and the United States, which will be helpful to those who encounter Mexican immigrant students later in educational settings. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate and serve in local wards. Juarez Stake Academy was built in 1904 by the first American pioneers to settle in Mexico. The school aims to provide both American and Mexican students with a high level of education that will allow them to qualify for positions in the best colleges in Mexico and the United States. 90% of the students come from Spanish-speaking homes, while the other 10% come from English-speaking homes. 100% of the children are bilingual to a significant degree by the end of their first year in school. Housing is set up for students participating in this program. Student teachers who go to Dublan are housed in local member homes. In Juarez, the student teachers live in a boarding house operated by a Spanish-member-couple. Room and board in Juarez is approximately $350 US dollars per month. |

| The Colonia Juarez Temple sits on a hill directly above the Academy. The temple was dedicated by President Hinckley in 1998 and was the first of the smaller temples to be built in Mexico. Apple and peach orchards, owned mainly by the members of the Colonia Juarez Stake, surround the temple and Juarez Stake Academy. | ![]() |
