Washington D.C. Teaching

Secondary and elementary education students seeking a rare opportunity to teach in an urban inner-city environment will want to explore the possibility of teahcing for one semester in Washington D.C.  Student teachers have found this experience to be rewarding and challenging as they become personally acquainted with the magnificent capitol city of Washington D.C., the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the students they teach, and the surrounding areas of historical interest.

Secondary students will be placed at Woodrow Wilson High School, a inner-city public school, or Duke Ellington Academy which is a fine arts magnet school.  Four different elementary schools are used for placing student teachers.  Three of the elementary schools are currently working with BYU on curriculum development as well as support and training for the teachers.

The student teaching supervisor in Washington D.C. is a BYU graduate who has taught in the D.C. public schools and has lived in the area for many years.  She is knowledgeable, supportive, and dedicated to helping student teachers have a successful experience.  In addition to the seminars, observations, and competent advice, she takes students to see historic areas and sites in the D.C. area that an average tourist might miss.

Student expenses for the DC program include regular BYU tuition, airfare, food, housing, transportation to and from school (bus and/or metro), and any other personal expenses.  Housing is arranged for single female students at the Crystal Towers Apartment Complex in Crystal City, VA.  Married students and single male students are responsible for finding their own housing.  There are several LDS singles wards in the area, and institute classes are also available.
