Teacher candidates seeking an opportunity to work with a diverse population of students (60.8 percent Hispanic, 32.2 percent African American, 4.8 percent Caucasian, and 2.1 percent Asian) may want to consider student teaching for one semester in the Aldine School District in Houston, Texas. This district is located 17 miles north of downtown Houston, in the north quadrant of Harris County. It has used its resources wisely to provide new and well-kept schools and to develop many useful programs to assist the needs and circumstances of the students and their families. The district emphasizes fine arts, math/science magnet schools, Montessori, emergent literacy, and ESL and bilingual programs. Accepted student teachers will be housed nearby at The Park at Research Forest.

Aldine Student Teaching Program

Aldine School District has a unique program for student teachers: Most semesters, over 100 student teachers are brought in from universities across the United States. Supervisors are typically retired teachers or administrators from the district who know the programs very well. In addition, the district conducts weekly seminars for continued professional development and support.

Female student teachers who go to Houston stay at The Park at Research Forest, located in the Woodlands. The district requires that you have your own car, as public transportation in the area is unreliable. Male and married students should contact Nancy Bassett about housing at NISTP@byu.edu.
