Corporate Instructional Designer
Job Purpose Statement: Perform activities required to maintain the
instructional integrity of all company instructional products.
Reporting Structure: Under supervision of Director
Job Functions:
- Participate in the development, implementation, and ongoing review and
revision of policies, standards, documentation and processes to insure
company products meet minimum standards of excellence and consistency in
terms of instructional design integrity.
- Create, implement and maintain state of the art learning templates for use
within development tools and instructional products.
- Define and maintain ID audit process.
- Define and maintain ID certification process.
- Support ongoing definition, implementation and maintenance of
- ID audit process
- Editing standards
- On-line help and documentation systems
- ID and Instructor Certification programs
- Partnership certification programs and processes
- Company Web Page
- Determine courseware deficiencies related to instructional design and
integrity; coordinate with Product Development departments and Marketing to
correct deficiencies.
- Conduct usability studies and needs assessments as needed to support
ongoing development and improvement of product.
- Provide input to new tools and engine specifications, including interface
design; write instructional design specifications for these products as
needed.
- Collaborate and consult with software engineers and graphic artist to
create prototypes of new or proposed instructional strategies and features
within and across all products.
- Design and deliver presentations and/or demonstrations to internal and
external clients.
- Contribute to leadership role of company in the instructional design
community through on-going education, written and oral presentations and
publication of research reports, white papers and popular press articles.
- Act as internal expert consultant to External Development Partnership
staff.
Job Qualification Requirements
- Knowledge:
- Master's degree in Instructional design, Educational Technology,
Instructional Technology, Adult Education or related discipline.
- Knowledge of Mager's Instructional Objectives mandatory. Knowledge of
Keller's ARCS Model, Bloom's Taxonomy, Merrill's Component Display Theory,
Merrill's ID Shell Theory highly desirable.
- Knowledge or familiarity with visual display design principles highly
desirable.
- Knowledge or familiarity with Information Mapping, EPSS, GUI/Human
interface design principles, and on-line documentation and help systems
and software a plus.
- Experience:
- Three to five years experience as an instructional designer in a
business setting, including experience in one or more of the following
areas: video, interactive video, CBT, CD-ROM, multimedia, on-line
documentation, help systems, WEB based information or instruction.
- Experience with multimedia authoring or development tool desirable.
- Background or experience in one or more of the following content areas a
plus:
- Technical Programming
- Information Technology and/or Systems
- Human Resources Content (Sales, Communication, Project Management,
Interviewing, Performance, Evaluation, etc.)
- Hardware used: :
Personal computer, fax and Xerox machines, telephone, and calculator.
- Software used: :
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Applications (Exchange,
Power Point, and Excel.) HTML a plus.
- Other:
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
- Highly organized and detail oriented.
- Capable of working with minimal supervision.
- International travel required as necessary.
- Open to change.
- Interested in new technologies and instructional strategies.
Distributed Course Developer
Essential Job Functions
Under the supervision of the Director of and working closely with the Media
Developer, associated media developers, and faculty members, the Distributed
Course Developer is responsible for the generation of quality distributed
courses. Designs distributed courses using a systematic design and development
methodology.
Responsibilities:
- Designs distributed courseware using a systematic instructional design
model in a service bureau setting.
- Ensures that quality distributed course development projects are completed
on schedule and within budget.
- Manages project kickoffs. Ensures clear, timely, and effective project
communications with and among the design and development project team,
associated media developers, faculty members, and other university
employees.
- Continuously improves a systematic instructional design model used in a
service bureau setting to optimize the capability to develop distributed
courses that may include a wide variety of media.
- Proactively identifies instructional design challenges and works with
clients and project teams to implement solutions.
- Participates in internal faculty and staff training.
- Supervises student instructional design and production assistants.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Ability to apply a systematic instructional design and development model
in real world settings.
- Knowledge of learning theory, instructional theory, and applications of
media to instructional scenarios.
- Ability to generate basic text/graphic materials in HTML format.
- Conversant in new and emerging technologies for instruction including;
world wide web, teleconferencing, compressed digital video, on-line
discussion groups, listserves, etc.
- Ability to work collaboratively in groups that include university staff
and faculty members.
- Ability to transform complex bodies of information into professionally
written, clear, fun, effective instruction.
- Ability to express instructional content using graphical, video, and audio
techniques to augment verbal information.
- Ability to develop effective instruction that is not limited to a single
pedagogical orientation.
Must be able to present samples of distributed courses and other written
materials previously developed such as workshops, job aids, and print-based self
study materials.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application
program packages is a prerequisite.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational
technology, communications or related field.
- Working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment
platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and
a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia
systems.
Specialized Skills Required
Equivalent to Master's degree in Instructional Technology or closely related
field. Will consider applicants anticipating completion of Master's degree
within 1 year of hire. Experience developing distributed instructional products.
Must be able to present samples of distributed courses and other written
materials previously developed such as workshops, job aids, and print-based self
study materials.
Desirable Qualifications
Advanced HTML, multimedia and graphic design skills. Video production
experience.
