Sample Job Description: Multimedia Developer

Essential Job Functions

Under the supervision of the Associate Director and working closely with the Distributed Course Developer, associated media developers, and faculty members, the Media Developer is responsible for the design and development of graphics and other mediated course materials reflecting high production values and demonstrated instructional value.

Develops graphic-rich print, HTML, multimedia and video-based materials for distributed courses. Maintains database driven distributed course web site. Creates the graphical look and feel of distributed courses that may include various media so that all media are visually integrated. Oversees development of mediated content such as cgi scripts, Java applets, video production, and CD-ROM materials produced by other university personnel and external consultants. Coordinates activities of media developers with activities of Distributed Course Developer and faculty members. Generates templates for distributed courses for future course design efforts.

Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to apply principles of graphic design, animation, video design, and multimedia design to the task of generating instructional materials. Ability to efficiently conceptualize the necessary materials for single media (i.e. compressed digital video) and hybrid (i.e. world wide web, videotape, and face-to-face) distributed courses. Ability to edit written materials into formats conducive to alternative forms of delivery. Ability to oversee the work of others, meet strict development deadlines, track progress, and adjust tasks and schedules to meet unanticipated demands. Must be able to present samples of graphic design for web-based and other mediated instructional materials.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. Equivalent to Bachelor's degree in graphic design, computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications related field. Working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.

Specialized Skills Required

Experience developing extensive web-based materials. Experience working on video productions in some capacity. Must be able to present samples of web-based and other mediated instructional materials.

Desirable Qualifications

Educational emphasis in multimedia and web design. Experience developing distributed instructional products. Advanced HTML, JAVA, cgi authoring skills. Advanced video production experience.
