Web Publishing Space

The University is now providing 15MB of disk space on a web server free of charge for each student and faculty member for publishing web documents. We recommend that faculty and students use this space for publishing personal web pages and their resume/vita. Faculty can also use the space for publishing course syllabi. Links to these documents can easily be added to personal profile pages on the department web site.

To Register and Activate your Web Space

You must register/activate your web space before you can use it. This only needs to be done once.

  1. Open your web browser to: http://it.byu.edu/webpub/
  2. Click on the "Student" or "Employee Personal" link
  3. In the left column, click on the "Personal Web Space Options" link under "Ordering"
  4. Sign in with your Net ID and Route Y password.
  5. Click "Create"
  6. Follow the directions being displayed on the screen.

Within a few minutes, you will receive an email informing you once the web space has been created and is available for use.

To Access your Web Space from PC (Windows 2000, XP)

  1. Open My Computer
  2. From the "Tools" menu, click "Map Network Drive".
  3. In the "Folder" box, type: \\webpub.byu.net\yourNetId
      substituting "yourNetId with your Net ID.
  4. Click "Finish".
  5. You will be prompted to ender your RouteY User Name (Net ID) and password.
  6. Click OK and the drive will appear under My Computer.
  7. Drag your web page files to the WWW folder and they will become available on the web.

To view your site from a web browser, go to http://webpub.byu.net/yourNetId/yourFileName
Substitute yourNetId with your Net ID and yourFileName with the name of a file you created.

When you are finished, it is very important to disconnect from the network drive by right-clicking on the drive icon, under "My Computer" and selecting "Disconnect"

To Access your Web Space from a Mac (OS X or higher)

  1. Click on the Finder icon in the Dock.
  2. Click on the "Go" menu and choose "Connect To Server".
  3. In the "Server Address" field, type: smb://webpub.byu.net/yourNetID
      substituting "yourNetId with your Net ID. Click "Connect".
  4. After a delay, a dialog box will appear. In the "Username" field enter your Net ID. In the "Password" field enter your Route Y password. Click "OK".
  5. After a delay, a network drive icon with the same name as your Net ID will appear on the Desktop and a network drive window will appear.
  6. You will see folders labeled CGI-BIN, GROUPS, and WWW.
  7. Drag your web page, graphics, vita or syllabus files to the WWW folder. They will then become available to the world on the Web.

To view your site from a web browser, go to http://webpub.byu.net/yourNetId/yourFileName
Substitute yourNetId with your Net ID and yourFileName with the name of a file you created.

When you are finished, it is very important to disconnect from the network drive dragging the network drive icon to the Trash.

To View your Web Page

Anyone can access your web pages by using the URL:

   http://webpub.byu.net/yourNetId/yourFileName

Substitute yourNetId with your Net ID and yourFileName with the name of a file you placed on the server.

When you name your files, avoid the use of spaces and special characters (&*%$, etc). Word documents should have the suffix, ".doc", and HTML documents should have the suffix, ".html". Examples of proper files names include: "syllabus560.doc" and "myWebPage.html".
