Why I Became a Teacher
Religion professor will share the lessons he learned from teachers in his life.
John Hilton III, assistant professor of ancient scripture in the College of Religious Education, will present at the final Power of Teaching lecture for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Hilton’s presentation will focus on the teachers in his life, including how they have influenced him over the past 15 years of his teaching career. He will share lessons they have taught him and point out ways teacher candidates can utilize those tips to prepare future generations.
Hilton has a master’s degree from Harvard and a doctorate from BYU, both in education. He came to BYU after teaching seminary and institute for 11 years, teaching in various locations, including Miami, Florida, and Boise, Idaho. He also managed the social media and internet sites for seminaries and institutes.
Hilton has published several books for youth about dating and understanding the gospel and the scriptures. He and his wife, Lani Olsen, have five children.
The Power of Teaching lecture series was organized in 2007 as an effort to validate those who are majoring in education and to encourage other students to consider education as a major.
