What Can I Do As a Parent?
"The theory is that the earlier you can get children reading and proficient with literacy, the better off they're going to do down the road throughout their academic career. The foundation of all success is their ability to be a proficient reader and writer."
David Doty, Utah Assistant State Commissioner of Higher Education, Daily Herald 11/13/2007
Systematic Engaging Early Literacy (SEEL) is designed to give young children strong start with reading skills. SEEL works by being both educational and fun for children.
Getting started with SEEL is simple. There is not a specific place where you have to begin. You can be involved with your child's literacy in a variety of ways.
Some of the Ways You Can Support

- Ask your child’s teacher if you can help with SEEL in your child's classroom
- Ask your child’s teacher for SEEL activities you can do with your child at home
- Look through the SEEL-at-Home activities and choose one to try out
- Volunteer to help other children learn to read using SEEL activities in your local elementary school
- Become familiar with the SEEL program by reading other sections of the SEEL Web site
- Ask your child's teacher if they have heard of SEEL and use it in the classroom
However you choose to become involved with SEEL it will benefit your child in developing strong reading skills.
Resources & Activities
SEEL provides many activity ideas that are proven to increase young children’s reading skills. Each activity states the objective or target sound, briefly explains what the teacher or parent should demonstrate, briefly explains what the child should do, and how to review the activities target sound. SEEL encourages teachers and parents to be creative in adapting activities to each individual child’s needs and adding to the activity to maximize child engagement.
