Curriculum Overview

What is SEEL curriculum?

SEEL’s curriculum is an intense course of focused literacy instruction for young children. SEEL’s design allows children multiple experiences with a variety of literacy activities over an array of classroom settings. The curriculum takes advantage of the daily routines of the classroom. It infuses meaningful literacy activities throughout the school day, such as during traditional large group instruction, as well as during non-traditional transition times. This increases the frequency in which children are exposed to target skills and ensures greater opportunity to learn them.

The curriculum is deliberately designed to augment a child's natural path of development. Learning activities are explicitly taught and are systematically sequenced. Children are provided with learning opportunities that are within their ability to understand and do, while increasing gradually in sophistication at a pace that takes into account individual differences.

SEEL capitalizes on playful practice, making learning how to read and write both engaging and motivating. Songs, chants, movement, art, drama, games and more are incorporated, making practicing of skills enthusiastically embraced and often requested.

Founded on scientifically based reading evidence, SEEL curriculum includes all basic components of literacy acquisition: oral language, print awareness, phonological awareness, phonics, word study, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. It has been field-tested, showing evidence that it is effective for all children. Most significantly, English language learners and children with language deficits, who are most at-risk for reading failure, showed remarkable gains (Culatta & Hall, in press). SEEL curriculum aligns with national core standards.
