Phonics is the relationship between spoken sounds and the letters or words that represent those sounds in print.

It is a primary goal of SEEL to increase children’s understanding of the relationship between sound and printed letters or words. Some of the objectives SEEL has regarding phonics/word recognition are:

  • Children can match a sound to a written letter or word.

  • Children can associate a written letter or words with a sound.

  • Children understand words seen both written in print and spoken orally.

SEEL Children

To increase phonic/word recognition in children, SEEL uses some of the following methods:

  • Exposing children to written letters or words along with their accompanying sound during play or activities.

  • Increasing the frequency of letter-sound association in conjunction with print.

  • Frequent repetition of sounds along with their accompanying letter(s) or word.
