Motivating, Playful Learning

 

Systematic Engaging Early Literacy (SEEL) combines four words and meanings that guide what you do and say. SEEL is systematic in order to make it easy for you to use. SEEL is engaging in order to make it effective for children. Early Literacy refres to when we do SEEL and since you are already preschool and kindergarten teachers, you are involved in early education. Here is a brief overview of the meaning of Systematic Engaging Early Literacy.

Systematic

Know where you are going and how to get there by:

  • Specifying literacy targets using SEEL's and your districts's curricula
  • Focusing on skills that help children achieve targets
  • Providing sufficient practice for learning
  • Trusting the process and methods even if different from yours

Engaging

SEEL instruction focuses on the way children prefer to learn by:

  • Varying the presentation
  • Involving the whole child in activites
  • Incorporating intrigue and emotion
  • Fostering hands-on exploration
  • Hearing and using children's inputs
  • Providing children with interesting ways to respond/practice

Early

A child's confidence in his or her ability is established in the earliest learning experiences by:

  • Assuring that all literacy targets and activities are developmentally appropriate
  • Providing success in each teaching moment
  • Focusing on individual needs

Literacy

Students first blend sounds without print, then add letters written on manipulatives, then:

  • Use rhyming skills to create printed words to signal meaning
  • Add onsets to rimes to change meanings
  • Select letters from alternatives to compose simple words
  • Read words in meaningful contexts using onset and rime or cvc structure
