Letter-sound association refers to knowing the sound each letter makes. Since reading is based on associating the letter symbol with the sound that the letter makes, children must have a well-established knowledge of letter sounds to read words and sentences.

The teacher can explicitly teach the sounds that letters make and strengthen children’s knowledge of letter-sound associations in playful and purposeful ways.  Children do not have to know all letter names before being exposed to letter-sound associations.  Letter-sound associations can be taught for the letters children can name.
