IRB - Using Human Subjects in Research
Please refer to the IRB Overview page on the ORCA website for general information about the IRB and its policies.
The McKay School of Education houses a subcommittee that reviews and approves Exempt and Expedited protocols for its faculty and students. This committee meets 2 times a month, on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. All protocols must be submitted to Daniela Cisternas electronically (daniela_cisternas@byu.edu), or dropped off to the Dean's Office (301 MCKB), ONE WEEK PRIOR to the Thursday meeting. Protocols not received by the deadline will be held for the next scheduled meeting.
NOTICES:
IRB contact information on Consent Forms should be changed to "Brigham Young University IRB Administrator; A-285 ASB; Provo, UT 84602; 801-422-1461; irb@byu.edu."
**Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, the MSE IRB committee will be meeting on NOVEMBER 5TH and 19TH. Protocols will be due to the Dean's Office by OCTOBER 30TH and NOVEMBER 13TH, respectively.**
To submit a protocol:
- Complete the application found under the "Forms and Documents" heading on the ORCA website. For details and instructions, please refer here.
- Include all applicable appendices, including IRB tutorial certificates for any co-investigators, research technicians, research assistants, or student assistants that will have interactions with the research subjects. The tutorial is found at https://irbtutorial.byu.edu.
- For those conducting research in public schools, please also include a district level letter of approval stating that they are aware and approve the research being conducted in the schools. We are aware that some districts have a policy that will not allow them to write a letter of approval without receiving documentation of IRB approval first. In those situations, please make a note of it in your application.
Waivers or modification of consent and amendment request forms are also found on the ORCA website, under the "Forms and Documents" heading.
