*Yell for Y
Objective
Associate the letter Y with the /y/ sound in words such as yes, yellow, and yell.

- Paper and pencils
- Yellow marker, crayon, or piece of paper (optional)
- Yellow objects (optional)
State the Objective
Tell the children that they will read and yell words that start with the letter Y, such as yarn, yes, yawn, and yellow.
Literacy Activities
Recognize words with the /y/ sound
- Hold up the word yellow.
- Tell the children, “If you hear the /y/ sound in yellow, say yes!”
- Repeat with other /y/ words: yummy, yesterday, you, yard, yawn, yarn, yellow.
Y actions
Pretend to do things that use a Y word and let the children imitate you.

Go to a yard and yell
- Tell the children that they are in a pretend yard where they can yell.
- Have them yell words that begin with the /y/ sound in the yard:
- Yell, “yippee!”
- Yell, “yikes!”
- Yell, “yummy!”
- Yell, “yay!”
- Yell, “yes!”
Make a yellow Ys
- Let the children write Ys using yellow crayons or markers (optional).
- Have the children ask each other, “Is your letter a Y? Does your letter make the /y/ sound?”
Yell for yellow
- Hold up the word yell.
- Tell the children to yell for yellow.
- Search the area for something yellow.
- When a child finds something yellow, let the children yell, “yellow!”
