State the Objective
Tell the children that they will put objects that start with N on a nice, new napkin as they listen for words that start with the /n/ sound, such as new, nose, and napkin.

Literacy Activities
Nest things on a napkin

• Give each child a napkin and tell them that it is nice and new.
• Have the children unfold their napkins and tell them that only things that start with the /n/ sound can go on the napkin. 
• Help the children identify the picture cards (see below). 
  • If the item begins with the /n/ sound, let the children nest it on the napkin saying, "Nest the___ (nose) on the nice, new napkin!"  
  • If it does not begin with the /n/ sound, have the children set the card to the side saying, "No ___ (carrot) on the nice, new napkin."  

• Point to each /n/ item on the napkin and name them all, repeating the /n/ sound (e.g., /n/, /n/, /n/, nose). 

   

   

Identify the target letter

• Say a word that begins with the /n/ sound (e.g., nice) and ask the children if the word begins with the same sound as nose, repeating the /n/ sound (e.g., /n/, /n/, /n/, nose). 
  • If the word begins with the /n/ sound, have the children touch their noses.
  • If the word doesn’t begin with /n/, have the children shake their heads “no.”
