State the Objective
Tell the children that they will play with play dough as they listen for words that start with the /p/ sound, such as press, pat, and play.

Literacy Activities
Pinch, pound, and pull play dough

• Give the children some play dough.
• Encourage the children to play with their play dough in ways that begin with /p/, such as pinch, push, pull, press, punch, poke, and pound.

Identify words that start with P

• Help the children think of things that start with the /p/ sound (e.g., pepper, pizza, pig, popcorn, pear, pen, penguin). 

• Have the children mold their play dough into two or three of the objects they thought of as they repeat the /p/ sound and word: “/p/, /p/, /p/, 

  pizza!”

• Invite a child to come up and present their play dough creation as they lead the children in saying the /p/ sound and word (e.g., "/p/, /p/, /p/, pizza!").
