Tell the children that they will write Ks on a kind king’s kite as they recognize and name the letters K and k.

Literacy Activities
Put Ks on a kite

• Write and name the letters K and k. 
• Put on the nametag and say, “I’m a king, a kind king.”
• Have the children make the /k/ sound as they write Ks for the king on small pieces of paper. 
• Show a kite or a drawing of a kite (see below) and say that it is for the kind king.
• Let the children write Ks on the kind king’s kite.

Actions of a kind king

• Ask the children to listen for the /k/ sound as you read the words kitten, kite, kangaroo, key, kid, kitchen, and kettle.  
• Ask questions about what the kind king could do in the kingdom:
• In the kingdom, would Kind King K . . . .
  • Kiss a kitten?
  • Fly a kite with kids?
  • Keep a key to the kingdom?
  • Feed a kid in the kitchen?
  • Keep a kettle in the kitchen?
  • Kick a kangaroo out of the kingdom? 
• Have the children hold up a K when they hear the /k/ sound in the questions.
