State the Objective
Tell the children that they will take Os on and off an octopus as they recognize and name the uppercase letter O and lowercase letter o.

Literacy Activities 
O for the octopus 

• Write and name O and o, pointing out that the uppercase and lowercase letters are the same shape and make the /o/ sound.
• Have the children write Os in the air with their fingers.
• Invite the children to stack the letter cards (see below) face down on the octopus picture (see below) as they chant, "O, o, o, octopus!"
• Let the children take turns drawing a letter card.
• If the card is an O or an o, have the child place the card face up on the octopus.

Make the letter O 

• Let the children make the shape of the letter O using different body parts (e.g., mouth, hands, arms).
• Let the children stand up and hold hands in a circle to make a big O shape.
• Have the children make the O circle bigger by spreading out or smaller by stepping forward.

Write the letter O 

• Let the children write the letters O and o on the octopus.
