The Master of Teacher Education program is tailored to the working professional. It is a two-year evening and summer-intensive program. The curriculum is theory and practice based. Course work is completed on the Brigham Young University (BYU) campus.

Cohort learning groups
Candidates enter as a cohort, allowing for reasonable class sizes and the opportunity to build relationships with other professionals.
Designed for teachers
The courses are offered in the evenings and during the summer, allowing candidates to continue their professional assignments while completing the program.
Two-year program
Candidates complete the scheduled evening and summer course work during a two-year period.
Two focus options
Candidates choose one of two specialty areas: Literacy Education or Teacher Education.
MEd or MA options
Candidates who wish to earn an MEd will complete an Action Research Project. Candidates who wish to earn an MA will complete a Thesis.
Coursework
The courses enhance candidates’ abilities to work with both children and teachers and to promote democracy in schools.
The curriculum core provides a thorough understanding of theories and practices necessary to support and sustain democracy through education. Candidates apply research methods, statistics, and qualitative data analysis to a research project focused on work with children, teachers, and schools.Literacy Education
The literacy education specialty offers experienced teachers (pre-K-12) additional literacy knowledge and expertise. The courses highlight classroom literacy instruction, leadership, and professional development.
The courses are aligned with the current standards for reading professionals of the International Reading Association. Participants qualify for a Utah State Office of Education Reading Endorsement in addition to receiving their MEd or MA.Teacher Education
The teacher education specialty provides experienced teachers (pre-K-12) the opportunity to deepen historical, theoretical, philosophical, and practical understandings of teaching. Candidates explore the processes of becoming a teacher and continuing professional development. Particular emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge and ability needed to improve one’s own teaching practice and to assist others in the same process.

Requirements for acceptance to the program are as follows:
• Complete the admissions procedures and meet the entrance requirements of the University Graduate School.
• Provide evidence of successful experience as a full-time certified teacher for a minimum of one year.
• Have a grade point average of 3.25 or above for the last 60 semester hours of university course work.
• Obtain acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores (not more than five years old) must be submitted to the office of Graduate Studies before the application deadline.
• Applications for acceptance are evaluated by the Graduate Admissions Committee. Admission is based on faculty approval and available departmental resources.
