Partnership Schools Information

Information for Partnership Schools

  1. Mentor Stipends

Mentor teachers receive a stipend for having student teachers in their classroom. One week after the last day of student teaching, all evaluations will be due in the Education Advisement Center. Payment for cooperating teachers will be made at the end of the semester to only those mentor teachers whose evaluations have been received in the EAC. There will be two “waves” of payments: first, those whose evaluations have been received on time; second, those whose evaluations have been received past the due date. Teachers should make allowance for processing the stipend both in the EAC and the Administration Building. Processing takes approximately one month from the time the final evaluation is received.

  2. Licensure Renewal Points

Liaisons prepare certificates each semester for mentor teachers. (10 renewal points)

  3. Use of Student Teachers As Substitute Teachers

"Student teaching shall be equivalent to a full-time experience for at least a ten-week period or until the student has demonstrated master of established objectives. Student teachers shall be assigned in their major field of study with some experience provided in their minor field." (Utah State Office of Education)

Because this statement, published by the Utah State Office of Education, says that the student teaching shall be equivalent to a full-time experience, it precludes any other kind of experiences during the duration of student teaching. It is reasonable to expect that should the cooperating teacher experience an emergency and no other qualified teacher substitute can be found, the student teacher could assume the substitute role—but for no more than a one-day period. The student teacher should not be asked to substitute unless he or she has been in the classroom long enough to have gained sufficient experience.

Student teachers should not be considered as the first choice to serve as substitutes, nor should they be used to substitute for teachers other than their cooperating teacher. If student teachers do substitute for the cooperating teacher, they receive no pay for that service.

  4. Expectations for BYU Students During Teacher Job Actions

    • Cohort Students
If a job action occurs during a cohort practicum, the students will return to the university for classes according to the regular schedule.

    • Student Teachers
BYU student teachers are university students who work in the classrooms of certified cooperating teachers during their field assignments. In the event of a job action that results in cooperating teachers leaving the school buildings, the integrity of the student teaching site is compromised. All student teachers are released from their field assignments while the job action is in force at their schools, whether or not their individual cooperating teachers participate in the walk out. University supervisors may elect to hold classes or seminars on campus during the time student teaching is interrupted. Student teachers are expected to resume their field assignments as soon as the full complement of teachers returns to the schools and the training site is again intact.

    • Interns
BYU interns are contracted for the full school year by the school districts in which they teach. In the event of a job action, interns, like other teachers under contract, have the choice to remain in the school or to follow the action recommended by the local teachers’ association.
