The Mathematics Initiative developed from a directive of the Governing Board to conduct a study of the teaching and learning of math. A committee composed of faculty from the Department of Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Teacher Education, Instructional Psychology & Technology, and Educational Leadership and Foundations, together with specialists from each of the five partner school districts undertook this study. A professional development intervention was created and piloted to help increase teachers' knowledge of mathematics content and pedagogy. Funding was provided jointly by a State of Utah grant and Partnership resources.
