The BS in Special Education is a limited-enrollment program requiring department admissions approval. It is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. In order to graduate with this major, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education (USOE) licensing requirements. For more information regarding program requirements, please contact the Education Advisement Center (350 MCKB).
The following table displays the classes students will take prior to applying for the Special Education undergraduate program and the order in which they will complete their courses once they have been admitted to the program. The table does not include General Education courses (GEs) and other requirements. (Please note that CPSE 480 is a core program requirement and fulfills the Global & Cultural Awareness GE.) For students beginning the program after August 1, 2014, grades below C in any required coursework will not be accepted. Teacher candidates must maintain a total GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the program and to qualify for student teaching or an internship.
The final semester in the program will consist of student teaching or an internship. An internship continues through the entire school year, and interns are scheduled to graduate in June. Internship clearance will be reevaluated at the conclusion of CPSE 446/447 to verify candidates show sufficient competency to fulfill an internship. Passing CPSE 446/447 does not guarantee internship clearance. Those candidates who pass CPSE 446/447 but do not receive internship clearance will be reassigned to student teaching.
Starting with the 2017–2018 academic year, the TESOL and ASL requirements will be discontinued for the Special Education major. However, future students will still have the option of completing the TESOL minor or ASL classes if they want to. (Please note that TESOL and ASL courses do not appear on the table.) Students should contact ESS for more information. All current cohorts must complete the TESOL and ASL requirements.
