December 2020 Message From the Dean's Office

In looking at the Light the World Daily Service Calendar, the opportunity to #LightTheWorld for December 2 is called “Hero Highlight.” On this day we are given the chance to highlight someone who represents Christlike love to us and post that on social media. Since I am a social media flunky, I will use this message for my hero highlight.

I have many individuals in my family who are heroes to me, but I decided to pick someone outside of my family to focus on. My heroes are Jim and Colleen Pinegar. They are about to celebrate their 93rd birthdays and, in spite of the effects of aging, they still never cease to do good in whatever ways they can. Jim and Colleen are the kinds of people that are without guile, always assume the best in everyone, cry when others cry, celebrate when good things come to others, and truly follow the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. You can read more about them in an article published in the Church News and watch a video about them that went viral a few years ago when Jim was very ill. I truly love these people.

What makes Jim and Colleen so special? I think it is because they have the Christmas spirit all the time, not just in December when we celebrate the birth of Christ. Everyone can feel the power of their goodness. They are my heroes because they strive every day to live lives of true caring and to stay focused on the Savior in all that they do. They are Christlike in their actions, in their speech, in their intentions, and in their love.

At this time of year, when we think of all the things we are thankful for, I am thankful for the many heroes I have who are seeking to model themselves after our Savior, our ultimate example of a true hero. I thank all of you who do so many things that are examples to me of goodness and love. I hope that this will be a blessed and beautiful Christmas season for all of you and that you know you make a special contribution to all of us in the McKay School of Education.

Merry Christmas to all and, in the words of Charles Dickens, may we all “honor Christmas in [our] heart[s] and try to keep it all the year.”
