Q. Where are you from?

A. Spanish Fork, Utah.

Q. What and where have you studied? 

A. I completed my undergraduate and master’s work at BYU and my PhD at the University of Texas (UT). I study the professional and occupational socialization of physical education teachers and professional learning communities in K–12 and teacher education. 

Q. Where have you previously worked? 

A. Following my doctoral work at UT, where I taught several undergraduate courses, I spent the last four years at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. I taught advanced methods courses and several graduate courses along with chairing master’s theses. Prior to my time in higher education, I was a physical education teacher and basketball coach at Mapleton Junior High School in Nebo School District, Utah.

Q. Why did you choose to work at BYU? 

A. It’s been a dream of mine for many years to work at BYU. I’m excited to help build the physical education program and contribute to teacher education in general.

Q. If your entire life was a movie, what would the title be? 

A. Life in the Fast Lane. I have five children.

Q. What are you most likely to become famous for? 

A. Being the husband of Heidi Beddoes.

Q. What is your favorite thing about the McKay School? 

A. I love the unique blend of faith and scholarship.

Q. What do you regret not starting or doing when you were younger?

A. I should have started playing pickleball more when I taught it several years ago in physical education. I would have been prepared for its current popularity.

Q. What was the first career you dreamed of having as a kid? 

A. Professional athlete of any kind.

Q. What’s the most exciting thing you’ll do in 2022? 

A. Go skiing again on the amazing Utah slopes.

Q. Where could we find you on most Saturday mornings? 

A. At the gym.

Q. Where is your favorite place to go on vacation? 

A. Anywhere with a great golf course.

Q.  Your house is on fire, you have 3 minutes to grab 3 things. What are they? 

A. Assuming my family was taken care of, I would secure my golf clubs.

Q. Who would you like to swap places with for a day? 

A. Phil Mickelson, my favorite golfer. 

Q. What movie quotes do you use on a regular basis? 

A. “Talk to me, Goose!” from Top Gun. “Put your hand down,” from Remember the Titans.
