Graduation Speakers Announced for the McKay School’s April 2018 Convocation

Speakers for the McKay School’s April 2018 convocation include Professor Bullough and two graduating students

Graduation is next week and the David O. McKay School of Education has announced who will be speaking at this April’s graduation ceremony. The featured speaker will be McKay School professor Robert V. Bullough Jr., Allison Barney, and Jaelynn Horton, two members of the McKay School’s graduating class, will also speak.

Bullough has taught at the McKay School for nearly 20 years, specializing in teacher education and the historical and philosophical foundations of education. Bullough earned his doctoral degree from Ohio State University in 1976, and he is an emeritus professor of educational studies from the University of Utah. In 1999, Bullough was appointed a professor in the McKay School’s Department of Teacher Education. Robert V. Bullough Jr.

Over his career, Bullough has received many awards and honors. In 2007, he won the Karl G. Maesar Research and Creative Arts Award, and he received the Benjamin Cluff Jr. Award for Excellence in Education in 2011. He was an external fellow of the BYU Humanities Center from 2013 to 2014. Bullough serves on 11 editorial or journal advisory boards, and he has authored 16 books and scores of articles during his lengthy research career. He is currently the associate director of the Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling (CITES) within the McKay School. 

Before Bullough’s remarks, Horton and Barney will speak. Barney was born and raised in Sandy, Utah, and is graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Communication Disorders. This winter semester, she was awarded an ORCA grant that has allowed her to research the emotion inferencing abilities of children with language impairment under Professors Bonnie Brinton and Martin Fujiki. Over the course of two years, Barney also worked with Professor Barbara Culatta on the development of the Systemic Engaging Early Literacy Project; she helped create, edit, and manage over 600 lesson plans designed to teach literacy skills to young children. In May, Barney will continue her education at BYU by entering the master’s education program in speech-language pathology. 

Horton grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, before coming to BYU. She is graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in teaching English to foreign-language speakers. During her time at BYU, Horton received the Joseph and Ruth Smith Scholarship and the Marigold N. Saunders Scholarship. She researched Jungian psychology and holistic education under Professor Cliff Mayes, and she also researched technology integration with Professor Jennifer Wimmer. After graduating, she is excited to be a full-time mother, with a newborn due to arrive on June 30. 

The convocation will be held on Friday, April 27, in the Smith Fieldhouse at 8:00 a.m.
