McKay Money Matters—June 2018

Summer is here and it’s time to check out new funding opportunities and work on your proposals!

Did you know: 30 MSE internal grants paid the salaries for 119 students in 2017? If you missed the MSE Grant Development Workshop in May, shoot an email to Jaynie Mitchell at jaynie_mitchell@byu.edu or go by her office to pick up your copy of the 2017 MSE Grant Review. It outlines research successes for 2017 and includes information and quotes from faculty reports.

Changes to MEG/ORCA Grants: BYU’s ORCA office has discontinued MEG and ORCA grants. These funds will now be distributed through individual colleges. Watch for more information this fall about ORCA student scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students and updated faculty opportunities for MSE Research, CITES Fellowships, Experiential Learning Grants, and Mini-Grants for Research.

Reminder: If you received an MSE Research Grant in the 2016–2017 or 2017–2018 cycle and plan to reapply for one this fall, you will need to show evidence in your application that you have applied for external funding for your project. Please contact Jaynie Mitchell if you have questions or need information on potential funders.

CONGRATULATIONS to our external grant awardees in spring 2018:

  • Ellie Young and Terisa Gabrielsen (CPSE): $62,100 from Utah State Board of Education
  • Kristine Tanner (ComD): $2,571,000 from the National Institutes of Health
