November 2021 Employee Spotlight: Corinne Mayberry
Q: Where are you from?
A: Basically Orem, UT. (I was born in Farmington New Mexico, but moved to Utah when I was three years old.)
Q: What and where have you studied?
A: I got my associate's from UVU, transferred to BYU for my bachelor's in recreation management (now called experiential design).
Q: Where have you previously worked?
A: I have worked at Thanksgiving Point, USU Extension, Lehi Senior Center and once at the SCERA movie theater—all the free popcorn I could ever want!
Q: Why did you choose to work at BYU?
A: I have always loved BYU, football, and Graham Canyon Ice Cream! BYU has a great environment and mission. I love being able to live its mission in strengthening myself and others.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the McKay School?
A: I love, admire, and respect teachers. This school helps support those with that noble calling to teach.
Q: Growing up, what teacher inspired you the most? How?
A: “Ms. Ducky.” My fifth-grade teacher was Ms. Mecham, but due to her love and huge collection of duckies, she had the nickname of Ms. Ducky. She taught in a way that made learning fun and engaging. She was kind, helpful and made awkward little Corinne feel loved, important, and that I could accomplish things!
Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
A: I wanted a “Mrs. Weasley sweater.” So, as one of my pandemic hobbies, I “learned” to knit. I made a slightly ridiculous sweater/jumper. It’s too big and has many mistakes, but I love it and wear it with pride! I’m sure I’ll wear to work once or twice.
Q: What do you regret not starting or doing when you were younger?
A: Learning more and doing everything! Also, probably creating better eating habits . . . hahaha!
Q: What was the first career you dreamed of having as a kid?
A: A secretary or a teacher.
Q: Do you collect anything?
A: I used to collect keychains and turtles. I still have a box of them in my garage. Haven’t done much collecting lately.
Q: If you could be any type of vegetable, what would you be and why?
A: Potato! Because “You are what you eat” and I LOVE potatoes. Baked, mashed, fries . . . .
Q: What weird food combinations do you really enjoy?
A: Cottage cheese on my baked potato.
Q: Where could we find you on most Saturday mornings?
A: Sleeping? I love sleeping. But really, I’d be cleaning, laundry, or recording videos for a kids' tap dance class.
Q: Where is your favorite place to go on vacation?
A: Hawaii, or a cabin in the mountains, or Disneyland . . . I’m slightly indecisive and I love it all!
Q: Would you rather spend a night out on the town or stay home inside with a book?
A: Both? In the warmer/summer months I say a night out! In the winter/colder months, I like to stay home, read, and drink hot cocoa.
