State the Model and Objective
Tell the children that they will make an animal mask and read words that use the silent e, such as face, make, hole, and side.
 
Literacy Activities
Make a Mask

  • Show the children the pictures of the cat and dog faces.
  • Have the children choose to make either a cat or a dog mask.
  • Read the text Trace a Face to Make a Mask or Use a Stick to Make a Mask with the children.
  • Follow the directions in the text to make the mask. 
  • Read the text again, fading support as appropriate.

  • Demonstrate changing from short vowel words into long vowel words by adding the silent e (e.g., robrobe, globglobe, panpane, planplane, hithide)

Change a word by adding a silent e

  • Write a list of short vowel words (rid, glob, plan, hug, hid, slid, kit, hat)  
  • Add a silent e at the end of the words to make long vowel words (ridride; slidslide, bitbite, hidhide, taptape, capcape, madmade, cancane, planplane, samsame, atate, kitkite; ripripe; hathate)
  • Ask the children to read the words.

Sort words with the long-vowel-silent-e pattern

  • Let children sort the word cards (see below) according to the long-vowel sound.
  • Have children read the words aloud.

Write words using the long-vowel-silent-e pattern

  • Have the children write words with the long-vowel-silent-e pattern from dictation (e.g., face, make, nose, hole)

We can make a mask.
Will you make a cat mask or a dog mask?
Will you be a cat or a dog?
 
Take a face to trace.
Trace the face.
Cut on the line to make a hole for the nose.
Cut on the line to make holes for the eyes.
 
Tape a stick on the back side of the mask.
Hold up the mask to your face with the stick.
 
Your face looks like a cat’s face or a dog’s face.
