State and model the objective
The children will shine a light on -ine words on a line and will read and write words, such as line, twine, dine, fine, shine, nine, mine, vine, and pine.
Literacy Activities
Shine a light on a line of -ine words

• Tie a piece of twine or strong string between two chairs to make a clothesline.
• Have the children read the nine -ine word cards (see below).
• Let the children hang nine -ine words on the line of twine using clothespins or paperclips.
• Have the children read each -ine word out loud.
• Turn off the lights and let the children shine a flashlight on the -ine words (e.g., Shine the flashlight on the word twine on the clothesline).

Wait in line to dine

• Place out the Wait in line side of the restaurant sign (see below). 
• Tell the children that it’s time to go dine in a fine restaurant.
• Pretend to go to a restaurant to dine, emphasizing the -ine words:
  • “Let’s go out to dine in a restaurant.”
  • “I know a fine place to dine.”
  • “How many are going to dine? Nine of us will dine.”
  • (Count out nine children) “Come on you nine, let’s go dine.”
  • Point out the restaurant sign and have the children read, “Wait in line.”
  • “We will make a line of nine and wait to dine.”
  • “It’s fine to wait in line to dine.”
• Flip the restaurant sign over so it reads “Time to dine.”
• Have the children read the sign and comment, “It’s time to dine! Let’s go dine!”

Identify, blend, and manipulate sounds

• With word-building cards (see below), have the children make new words by changing the vowel or either of the consonants:
  • Change the beginning consonant(s): fine→ mine, twine→ shine, dine→ fine
  • Change the vowel: line→ lone, shine→ shone, pine→ pane, mine→ mane
  • Change the ending consonant: fine→ file, pine→ pike, line→ live, mine→ mile

Read target words in texts 

• Engage the children in reading the target text Nine in Line to Dine (see below) together as a class or group.
• Read the text again, fading support.
• Help the children make a list of the -ine words.

Write about the activity using target words

• Let the children write words from dictation (e.g., line, shine, nine, fine, dine, pine, twine, mine, vine).
• Engage the children in interactive writing by suggesting topics or generating sentence frames:
  • “I don’t like to ____ __ ____ (stand in line, wait to dine).”
  • “I can shine a light on the word ____ (vine, mine, nine, twine, etc).”
