State and Model the Objective
The children will watch pitchers, catchers, and other players and then will read and write words that end with -er such as pitcher, catcher, hitter, player, viewer, and runner. 
 
Literacy Activities
Baseball players

• Have the children choose a baseball player picture.
• Label the players pitcher, hitter, catcher, and player.
• Give props to the players:
  • The ball to the pitcher.
  • The bat to the hitter.
  • The mitt to the catcher.
• Play a pretend ball game with a pretend ball.
• Illustrate a game with the baseball players:
  • The catcher stands behind the hitter.
  • The pitcher pitches the ball to the hitter.
  • The hitter hits the ball.
  • A player tries to catch the ball.   
  • The hitter runs the bases.
  • Other runners make it home.
  • The viewers cheer for the players. 

More Practice
Read target words in a text 

• Read the A Baseball Player target text to the children.
• Engage the children in reading the target text with you.  
• Read the text again, fading support.

Write target words

• Let the children write the roles of the players with a marker: pitcher, catcher, hitter, player, and runner.
