State and Model the Objective
The children will draw screws and goo and will read and write words with the long u spellings -oo, -ew, and -ue, such as goo, moo, screw, drew, blue, and clue.

Literacy Activities
Draw doodads

  • Point out the long u sound in the words screw, blue, and goo.
  • Show the odd items and parts of objects and explain that they are called doodads, and that the word doodad is used when we don’t know the name of an object.
  • Draw some doodads and say, “Look what I drew. I drew a few doodads.”

Draw goo, glue, and screws

  • Draw two screws, some blue goo (a blob), and two doodads.
  • Announce, “Look what I drew! I drew screws. I drew blue goo and two doodads!”
  • Have the children label their drawing doodads, screws, or blue goo
  • Hold up the Who drew . . . ? signs (found below) one at a time and invite the children to say “I drew!” if what they drew matches what the sign says.
  • Let the children write what they drew (e.g., “I drew ____ (doodads, screws, or blue goo).

Guess words that end in -oo, -ew, or -ue from clues

  • Help the children read words that end in -oo, -ew, and -ue (e.g., blue, glue, clue, crew, loop, hoop).
  • Using the list, give clues and have the children write the answer using a word that ends in -ue, -oo, or -ew.

    • tooboo, zoogoo
    • trueblue, clueglue
    • blewgrew, drewstew
  • Have the children identify the long u spelling in each set of words.

Read target words and patterns introduced in the activity

  • Read the We Drew a Few Doodads target text (found below) with the children.
  • Read the text again, fading support.
  • Repeat with the We Drew a Doodad target text (found below).

Write about the activity using target words and patterns

  • Make a word wall with long u spellings in different columns: -oo (e.g., goo, moo, doodad), -ew (e.g., screw, drew, chew, slew, new), and -ue (e.g., blue, clue).
