State the Objective
Tell the children that they will find words to describe themselves while they read and write long-i-silent-e (CVCe) words.

 

Literacy Activities
Learn about the long-i sound

  • Tell the children that some long-i words have a silent e at the end: bike, hike, ride, side, mine.
  • Read the book Five Words that Are Mine (optional) and point out the long-i-silent-e words: five and mine.

Read a text about what a child might like 

  • Read the Things I Like target text (see below) with the children.

     

  • Tell the children to choose their favorite action from the text.
  • Have the children say, “I like ___,” using the long-i phrase they chose. 

Make a list of likes and dislikes

  • Write some long-i-silent-e words from the text (e.g., bike, smile, hike, line, dime, side, mine, ice, mice, rice, five).
  • Have children come up with sentences about what they like and dislike using the words from the list, such as
    • “I do not like to skate on ice.”
    • “I like mice.”
    • “I like to smile.” 
    • “I like to bike.”
    • “I like to hike.” 
    • “I do not like to stand in line.”
  • Write down the sentences that the children came up with. 

Write long-i words

  • Have the children write long-i-silent-e words from dictation. 
  • Let the children write some long-i-silent-e words for things they like to do.
