State the Objective 
Tell the children that they will create caterpillars as they learn about the letter C and the /k/ sound.

Literacy Activities

Write the target letter 

• Write the letter C and tell the children its name.
• Tell the children that the C makes the /k/ sound.
• Have the children write the letter C in the air and on paper while making the /k/ sound.

Read about caterpillars

• Hold up a drawing of a caterpillar.
• Read The Caterpillar Can Climb target text (see below) to the children.
• Have the children find the words that start with C.
• Re-read the text and let the children clap and make the /k/ sound for each word that begins with the /k/ sound.
• Make a list of the C words from the text; have the children make the /k/ sound as you point to the C, and read the word:
  • Children: /k/, /k/, /k/
  • Teacher: Caterpillar!

Create a caterpillar

• Tell the children that they are going to make a caterpillar.
• Write a chain of Cs, saying /k/ every time you write a C.
• Add legs, eyes, and antennae to create a caterpillar (see example below).
• Let the children create their own caterpillars.
• As the children make caterpillars, make comments such as:
  • “Can your caterpillar climb?”
  • “This caterpillar isn’t in a cocoon.”
  • “Caterpillars can crawl.”
  • “You have a cool caterpillar!”
