Fly a kite around the kingdom

  • Show the children the king graphic and point out the K on his crown.
    • Explain to the children that K makes the /k/ sound, as in king.
  • Tell the children that King K loves kites, so they will make and fly a kite around the king's kingdom.
  • Give each child a kite graphic and have them decorate it with Ks.
  • Mix up the picture cards and have the children choose a card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide if the item on the card begins with the letter K.
    • If the item begins with the letter K, have the children glue the card to their kite graphic.
    • If the item does not begin with the letter K, have the children discard it.
  • Give the children a bow for the kite’s tail and let them color the bows.
    • Help the children attach the bows to a piece of string, then attach the string to the kite.
  • Allow the kids of the kingdom to fly their kites around the king while saying the /k/ sound.

More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Explain that King K wants to give a K to every kid in the kingdom.
  • Invite the children to write a letter K on a sticky note to give to the king.
  • Collect all of the K sticky notes and set them by the king.
    • Have the children come up to the king and select a sticky note.
    • Let them place the sticky note on their shirts as they say the /k/ sound.
