State the Objective
Tell the children that they will learn about what squirrels can do while they read short vowel words like jump, run, hop, smell, dig, and grab.

 

Literacy Activities
Learn about what squirrels can do

  • Read the book Ten Little Squirrels with the children (optional).
  • Tell the children that squirrels can do many things.
  • Display a list of things squirrels can do (see below).
  • Help the children read the list and make up gestures or actions to illustrate the items.

Squirrels can run
Squirrels can jump
Squirrels can hop
Squirrels can sniff and smell nuts
Squirrels can dig
Squirrels can grab a nut
Squirrels can crack a nut
Squirrels can hide a nut in a den
Squirrels can chomp on a nut
Squirrels can nap in a nest or a den


Write about what squirrels can do

  • Have the children write words from dictation that relate to things squirrels can do (e.g., chomp, smell, dig, grab, nap, hide, hop, sniff, run, jump).
  • Have the children finish the sentence: ”Squirrels can _____,” using some of the words from the lesson.

Read about things squirrels can do

  • Help the children read the Sniff, Stash, and Stuff Nuts text (see below).
  • Allow the children to re-read the text in small groups or pairs.
  • Show the children the A Squirrel Can Run and Jump target text (see below).
  • Have the children read the text.

Squirrels can dig up a spot to stuff nuts. 
Squirrels can stash nuts in a pit. 
A squirrel can pack a lot of nut snacks in a pit.
Then the squirrel will sniff spots to find the pit.
The squirrel can smell the nuts and dig up the pit.
Then the squirrel can stash a snack of nuts in its den or nest.
 

A Squirrel Can Run and Jump

Run, hop, and jump.
Grab a twig, trunk, or branch.
Swing on the twig or branch.
Land on top of a branch.
And then nap in a nest in the trunk.
