State the Objective
Tell the children that they will blend brownie batter as they listen for words that start with the /b/ sound, such as bake, bread, bagel and beans.
Literacy Activities
Learn the Black Bats chant
- Show the children the black bat picture cards (see below).
- Help them identify the pictures and repeat the word as you emphasize the initial sound.
- Ask the children if the word starts with the /b/ sound.
- Teach the children the Black Bats chant (see below), filling in a word from a picture card.
- Repeat the chant together, filling in other words from the picture cards.
- Ask the children if the picture starts with the /b/ sound.

If the picture starts with the /b/ sound, have the children flap their wings like a bat.

Blend black bat’s brownie batter
- Explain that the children will help the black bat blend a brownie batter of foods that begin with /b/.
- Let the children take turns drawing a picture card (see below) and naming the food.

Let them stir the picture in the bowl and say, “Blend ___ in the black bat’s brownie batter!”
Segment and count sounds in words
- Have the children clap once for each sound in the word bat (/b/ /a/ /t/).
- Ask the children how many times they clapped.
- Repeat with other words that start with /b/, such as big, bus, bed, bad, and bug.
- Point out that all of the words start with the /b/ sound.
