State the Objective
Tell the children that they will choose foods for children to chew and chomp while they listen for words that begin with the /ch/ sound, such as chocolate, chips, cherries, and cheese.
Literacy Activities
Choose foods to chomp
- Write down the word children.
- Explain that the children only like to chew foods that start with the /ch/ sound like chocolate, chips, cherries, and cheese.
- Help the children identify each picture card (see below), emphasizing the /ch/ sound.
- Let a child choose a picture card and decide whether it begins with the /ch/ sound.
- If the card starts with /ch/, have the child place it by the word children.
- Have the children say phrases like, “Chomp and chew the chips, children!”
Chomp and chew /ch/ foods (optional)
- Let each child choose a real /ch/ food (or picture card) (e.g., chips, cherries, cheese, etc.).
- Have them say, “I choose to chomp and chew ___!”
Read Chomp and Chew
- Display the Chomp and Chew target text (see below).
- Read the text to the children, pointing to each word and emphasizing the /ch/ sound.
- Show the children the ch blend and ask them to find other words that begin with the /ch/ sound.
List words with the /ch/ sound
- Make a list of /ch/ words the children got to chomp and chew (e.g., chocolate, cheese).
- Tell the children you can think of other words that start with /ch/ (e.g., chin, chair, cheetah).
- Ask each child to think of and share a word that starts with /ch/ (support as needed).
